I like the pop-up buttons thread. Very cool technology |

yeah... the areas seem to be fixed (but customizable) so its not as versatile as pure touch, but pretty good |

Give them time, they'll figure out something like touch pixels and be able to make dynamic pop-up buttons |

just waiting for someone to come out with "micro air bubbles" and then we have a "touch resolution"... like those thingies with metal sticks you can press your hand on to make a 3d impression |

From the page : "Utilizing the theory of electrostatics, we have designed a low-cost human-computer interface device that has the ability to track the position of a user's hand in three dimensions." |

up to $500 for a smart meter is a LOT |

it takes a lot of turning off light bulbs to recover that |

Juha, that's $500 for you and me, I bet they're much cheaper than that but either way you are correct. That's a lot of light bulbs. |

yes of course they are less than $500 to produce, which makes the whole thing rather pointless that these things are required BY LAW and then the utility companies put such a margin on it to make the whole thing completely pointless |

Free markets or total government control. neither work (too bad most people think those are the only two choices) :-/ |

From the article it seems the real reason for the smart meters was simply to do away with the meter readers |

Oh and to get the public to pay for it. |

which would all be fine had they not legislated the use of the meters |

The US politicians tis rather lazy/ignorant/stupid (your pick). They often let companies write legislation for them and the outcome is usually favorable towards the authoring company. It's not until it's law that they begin to see the error of their ways. |

I wrote to a Congressman or Senate Rep for my area and received back a message that basically said "you're too stupid to understand my job so leave me alone". I really didn't appreciate the message since I understood it much better than he did (legislation related to computers). |
