2009-04-28 06:30:55 AM *juha*   Mobile OS market shares in the US: http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/04/23/android-catches-up-to-palm-in-mobile-ad-market-share-iphone-still-blows-it-away/
2009-04-28 08:33:27 AM ncherry   Morning folks.
2009-04-28 08:36:57 AM juha1080   morning neil !
2009-04-28 08:39:34 AM ncherry   I like the pop-up buttons thread. Very cool technology
2009-04-28 08:41:00 AM juha1080   yeah... the areas seem to be fixed (but customizable) so its not as versatile as pure touch, but pretty good
2009-04-28 08:41:14 AM juha1080   you could have a row of buttons at the bottom of the screen for example
2009-04-28 08:41:15 AM jean-luc   morning
2009-04-28 08:41:48 AM ncherry   Give them time, they'll figure out something like touch pixels and be able to make dynamic pop-up buttons
2009-04-28 08:42:20 AM juha1080   just waiting for someone to come out with "micro air bubbles" and then we have a "touch resolution"... like those thingies with metal sticks you can press your hand on to make a 3d impression
2009-04-28 08:42:36 AM juha1080   yes
2009-04-28 08:42:47 AM ncherry   Yeah that's the ticket!
2009-04-28 10:05:46 AM ncherry   Juha, this might be a little interesting: http://vimeo.com/4366452
2009-04-28 10:06:18 AM ncherry   From the page : "Utilizing the theory of electrostatics, we have designed a low-cost human-computer interface device that has the ability to track the position of a user's hand in three dimensions."
2009-04-28 11:29:11 AM ncherry   Okay, this is interesting: WSj - Smart Meter, Dumb Idea? - http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124050416142448555.html
2009-04-28 02:21:48 PM *juha*8895   up to $500 for a smart meter is a LOT
2009-04-28 02:22:05 PM *juha*8895   it takes a lot of turning off light bulbs to recover that
2009-04-28 05:00:06 PM niklas   this chat does not happen to have an IRC backend?
2009-04-28 05:53:47 PM ncherry   Nope!
2009-04-28 05:55:29 PM ncherry   Juha, that's $500 for you and me, I bet they're much cheaper than that but either way you are correct. That's a lot of light bulbs.
2009-04-28 06:05:50 PM juha5282   yes of course they are less than $500 to produce, which makes the whole thing rather pointless that these things are required BY LAW and then the utility companies put such a margin on it to make the whole thing completely pointless
2009-04-28 06:06:10 PM juha5282   free markets...
2009-04-28 06:06:57 PM juha5282   especially the part about having to pay a monthly subscription to use it...
2009-04-28 06:07:28 PM ncherry   Free markets or total government control. neither work (too bad most people think those are the only two choices) :-/
2009-04-28 06:07:58 PM ncherry   $4 /month for the next 10 years, yeah saw that too!
2009-04-28 06:09:41 PM ncherry   From the article it seems the real reason for the smart meters was simply to do away with the meter readers
2009-04-28 06:10:00 PM ncherry   Oh and to get the public to pay for it.
2009-04-28 06:10:53 PM juha5282   which would all be fine had they not legislated the use of the meters
2009-04-28 06:11:01 PM juha5282   (cause nobody would buy them)
2009-04-28 07:30:21 PM ncherry   The US politicians tis rather lazy/ignorant/stupid (your pick). They often let companies write legislation for them and the outcome is usually favorable towards the authoring company. It's not until it's law that they begin to see the error of their ways.
2009-04-28 07:32:23 PM ncherry   I wrote to a Congressman or Senate Rep for my area and received back a message that basically said "you're too stupid to understand my job so leave me alone". I really didn't appreciate the message since I understood it much better than he did (legislation related to computers).
