2009-05-06 04:08:11 AM *juha*   keySet() should return a Set, not a Map, as the name implies?
2009-05-06 04:11:32 AM *juha*   and neither set or map are ordered so getting to last object makes no sense
2009-05-06 04:11:42 AM *juha*   you need a list for ordered list of objects
2009-05-06 04:12:43 AM *juha*   You can also use SortedSets
2009-05-06 04:13:22 AM *juha*   or SortedMap
2009-05-06 04:14:08 AM *juha*   (this is from Java Collections, no idea if Groovy follows any of this)
2009-05-06 04:51:13 AM marcf   Collections is a cool framework
2009-05-06 04:54:31 AM marcf   I didn't remember about "SortedSets and Sorted Maps",
2009-05-06 04:54:56 AM marcf   was looking at the site statistics and it is a very encouraging number
2009-05-06 04:55:01 AM marcf   1000 pageviews a day
2009-05-06 04:55:14 AM marcf   200 unique visits
2009-05-06 04:55:44 AM marcf   increased stickyness of the site (as measured by bounce rate)
2009-05-06 04:56:02 AM marcf   that means we must be doing something right
2009-05-06 04:56:36 AM marcf   people who stay spend 5 min
2009-05-06 04:57:05 AM marcf   then of course those don't include the chat traffic because the average would then be closer to 8 hours
2009-05-06 04:57:10 AM marcf   with neil alone
2009-05-06 04:57:38 AM marcf   I am going to do a new pass on the website content
2009-05-06 04:58:31 AM marcf   With the upcoming releases we can communicate at a feature level and introduce offerings, like the box for example
2009-05-06 06:22:39 AM ncherry   MarcF, I heard that
2009-05-06 06:26:39 AM ncherry   Thanks Guys, I'll check out SortedMap. I knew I was looking at the wrong stuff I just couldn't figure out what the right stuff was
2009-05-06 06:27:06 AM marcf   You have a mountain a APIs ahead of you
2009-05-06 06:30:51 AM ncherry   I haven't had my Tea yet, don't talk to me about APIs.
2009-05-06 06:31:29 AM ncherry   BTW, I already have a mountain of APIs behind me, there are more TLAs in Java than networking!
2009-05-06 06:33:15 AM *juha*   DIY electric cars -- group of hobbyists in Finland got fed up waiting for the auto industry to sell them affordable electric cars: http://www.sahkoautot.fi/eng
2009-05-06 06:38:26 AM ncherry   There's a guy in Tennesse who's been building them for years. All the Hollywood Stars have their cars done there. Neil Young had his 1960's Caddi done there (that just seems envromental moronic in so many ways)
2009-05-06 06:39:07 AM *juha*   they claim GM sold their battery patents to oil companies who are sitting on the tech doing nothing with it...

2009-05-06 06:40:46 AM ncherry   They're not sitting on them doing nothing, they're about to Patent Troll until the run out of oil then they'll be sitting on the new 'fuel'
2009-05-06 06:41:01 AM *juha*   same effect
2009-05-06 06:41:08 AM ncherry   Yup!
2009-05-06 06:42:08 AM ncherry   This where patents suck, they stiffle innovation more than they help it (see the sewing machine patent trolls of the 1800's)
2009-05-06 06:42:43 AM marcf   yeah abuse of the patent system is the plague
2009-05-06 06:43:03 AM marcf   in theory it is done so that innovation can profit easily
2009-05-06 06:43:15 AM marcf   in practice it can be used to stiffle competition
2009-05-06 06:43:23 AM marcf   many examples in software for sure
2009-05-06 06:44:00 AM marcf   I was reading "popular science, spanish edition" at the dentist yesterday
2009-05-06 06:44:07 AM marcf   there is a slew of electric cars coming online
2009-05-06 06:44:20 AM marcf   the Honda CLARITY is the one that sounded about right
2009-05-06 06:44:34 AM marcf   I like the look of the NISSAN (mixim?)

2009-05-06 06:45:46 AM ncherry   I've seen good things about the Ford mid-size car, 41 mpg (a gallon of electricity?)
2009-05-06 06:45:46 AM marcf   engine is all electric
2009-05-06 06:45:56 AM ncherry   shame only 41
2009-05-06 06:45:57 AM marcf   Ford? arent they dead? who are they?
2009-05-06 06:46:18 AM ncherry   Ford,- I'm not dead yet
2009-05-06 06:46:25 AM marcf   hehehe
2009-05-06 06:47:08 AM ncherry   The tesla will be wrapped around a pole 'round here :-/
2009-05-06 06:47:50 AM ncherry   I've noticed lately that all the 'lectric cars are automatic type trans, there goes my manual shift, rats
2009-05-06 06:48:29 AM marcf   the pure electrics do not need clutch
2009-05-06 06:48:41 AM marcf   the rotor is on the axle and basta
2009-05-06 06:48:54 AM marcf   so there is no transmission and no changing gear, manually or otherwise
2009-05-06 06:49:01 AM marcf   which makes for a KILLER experience
2009-05-06 06:49:11 AM ncherry   I think every 'merican should pedal their a** to work (maybe give then a little eltric motor to help them up hills) too much 'Wall-E' being done 'round here
2009-05-06 06:49:53 AM marcf   where we are going, we dont' need no clutches
2009-05-06 06:49:59 AM ncherry   'round a pole kind of killer. That's the purpose of the transmission to make all that power more controllable
2009-05-06 06:50:15 AM marcf   blabla bla
2009-05-06 06:50:35 AM marcf   there is a transmission because there is not enough power out of the engine at low regime
2009-05-06 06:50:39 AM marcf   period
2009-05-06 06:50:47 AM ncherry   Do we need am OR module for cars too? (6)
2009-05-06 06:51:09 AM marcf   did you see the video from juha? the geekmyride thing?
2009-05-06 06:51:18 AM ncherry   This time it's the other way around, 'lectric put out too much torque
2009-05-06 06:51:25 AM marcf   exactly
2009-05-06 06:51:35 AM ncherry   No, do we have a link in the link coral for it?
2009-05-06 06:51:51 AM marcf   I don't think we have a link coral, no?
2009-05-06 06:52:09 AM ncherry   (One of the many pages with all the link we have)
2009-05-06 06:52:15 AM marcf   talking about "round here", someone pointed out that the electrical is great for farm work
2009-05-06 06:52:34 AM marcf   torque at low speed is what you need
2009-05-06 06:52:49 AM marcf   without all the fancy transmission gears
2009-05-06 06:53:04 AM ncherry   Wouldn't be surprised, every on the farm is run off the tractors PTO (Power Tack Off)
2009-05-06 06:53:06 AM marcf   no maintenance (not even oil) is a big plus for farms
2009-05-06 06:53:33 AM ncherry   Tack shoul be Take, argh
2009-05-06 06:53:45 AM marcf   What is PTO anyway?
2009-05-06 06:54:22 AM ncherry   It's how all those farm attachments get their power (mechanical)
2009-05-06 06:55:26 AM marcf   You need a thermal source, that or a reliable access to the grid
2009-05-06 06:55:33 AM ncherry   You steal some torque from the drive shaft and put it through a secondary gear box to power things like the cutting blades on the front of the big tractors
2009-05-06 06:56:44 AM ncherry   Farms can have wind, geo, solar or bio (their waste products) to assist in power but they will need the grid
2009-05-06 06:57:10 AM marcf   or a good hydrogen base
2009-05-06 06:57:34 AM marcf   or both yeah
2009-05-06 06:57:36 AM ncherry   Lets face it trains work on electricity since the 1960's (last of the steamers died out here in the US)
2009-05-06 06:58:00 AM marcf   you ever rid the "TGV"
2009-05-06 06:58:05 AM marcf   Train a Grande Vitesse
2009-05-06 06:58:18 AM ncherry   Ugly Russian car, I won't admit to it
2009-05-06 06:58:34 AM marcf   what are you talking about, they are awesome trains
2009-05-06 06:59:10 AM ncherry   Oh, sorry, I thought there was a Russian car called the TGV
2009-05-06 06:59:20 AM *juha*   heh
2009-05-06 06:59:50 AM ncherry   The TGV is one of the high speed trains?
2009-05-06 06:59:55 AM *juha*   yes
2009-05-06 07:00:09 AM marcf   you need to get to EU
2009-05-06 07:00:29 AM marcf   'round here we ride in fast electric trains.
2009-05-06 07:00:52 AM marcf   land in Paris, take the TGV to amsterdam
2009-05-06 07:00:57 AM ncherry   We'll never those here in the US, too many grade level road crossings (they tend to mess up the choo-choo when someone won't wait a few minutes to get their smokes)
2009-05-06 07:01:31 AM marcf   you have it between NYC and Boston I think
2009-05-06 07:01:44 AM marcf   they always have a special name
2009-05-06 07:01:56 AM ncherry   Not a TGV, my friends work for AMTRAK
2009-05-06 07:02:11 AM marcf   I am pretty sure it is a TGV
2009-05-06 07:02:12 AM ncherry   Accela
2009-05-06 07:02:17 AM ncherry   It
2009-05-06 07:02:41 AM marcf   in spain for example it is called the "ave"

2009-05-06 07:03:33 AM ncherry   Sorry
2009-05-06 07:04:00 AM marcf   I thought bombardier was planes
2009-05-06 07:04:04 AM marcf   oh no, trains...

2009-05-06 07:04:36 AM ncherry   They have military contracts also
2009-05-06 07:04:37 AM marcf   if it is french then it is the TGV
2009-05-06 07:04:46 AM marcf   It sure looks like one
2009-05-06 07:04:55 AM ncherry   Can't argue with that
2009-05-06 07:05:09 AM marcf   8-)
2009-05-06 07:05:37 AM ncherry   The train can do up to 200, rumor has it they pushed it on a short section of special track here in NJ
2009-05-06 07:05:54 AM ncherry   that's mph not kph
2009-05-06 07:06:38 AM marcf   cool, we used to get news of speed record as kids all the time. it was fun
2009-05-06 07:06:58 AM marcf   I think the french ones on certain tracks can do 450kph
2009-05-06 07:07:12 AM marcf   which is 290mph?
2009-05-06 07:07:51 AM marcf   I think they cruise at 200mph ({)
2009-05-06 07:08:06 AM guest8979   quit the room
2009-05-06 07:08:25 AM marcf   Back to farm I have no idea is the energy requirements are compatible with a electric setup
2009-05-06 07:09:20 AM marcf   you got cutters, diggers, the wheels of course
2009-05-06 07:09:28 AM marcf   no idea
2009-05-06 07:09:44 AM ncherry   On the RR the engines convert diesel to electricity to power the trains, on the farm they just wan a PTO electric would work just as well
2009-05-06 07:10:37 AM ncherry   On the farm there is no high speed really everything pretty much moves along slowly so as not to damage the crops
2009-05-06 07:11:05 AM ncherry   Not much faster than the horse drawn stuff of 2 centuries ago
2009-05-06 07:11:13 AM marcf   true, good one!
2009-05-06 07:11:23 AM marcf   as long as we have 2HP we are good
2009-05-06 07:11:25 AM guest1454   quit the room
2009-05-06 07:11:32 AM marcf   the Tesla is 253HP
2009-05-06 07:11:54 AM marcf   What is a usual tractor?
2009-05-06 07:12:00 AM marcf   in HP diesel engine
2009-05-06 07:12:11 AM guest3799   quit the room
2009-05-06 07:12:45 AM marcf   Tractors with less than 25 HP make up the small end of the market. They're capable of handling most basic lawn work, but often can't provide enough power for more demanding jobs like tilling or heavy brush mowing. Between 25 and 65 horsepower is a comfortable middle ground that features tractors with capabilities suited for ranchette communities, horse farms, nurseries, and many commercial uses. Above 65 HP, you get into tractors designed for strenuous agricultural use, such as tilling fields and baling hay
2009-05-06 07:13:23 AM marcf   The largest tractors for commercial farming feature 200 HP engines or larger. Be aware: in some tractors, the horsepower available to attachments through the power take off (PTO) connection is less than the overall engine horsepower. Some attachments have more specific HP requirements than others, so make sure you check these ratings carefully.
2009-05-06 07:13:42 AM marcf   So the power is there
2009-05-06 07:13:47 AM marcf   question is "capacity"
2009-05-06 07:14:05 AM marcf   I have 200miles autonomy, moving a 2500lbs car around at light speed
2009-05-06 07:14:10 AM marcf   or close
2009-05-06 07:15:14 AM marcf   Tesla should work with John Deere
2009-05-06 07:15:39 AM marcf   of course it would make for a $200k tractor
2009-05-06 07:15:47 AM ncherry   I think they willin the future
2009-05-06 07:16:24 AM marcf   it will come
2009-05-06 07:16:54 AM ncherry   You know it's kind of funny the tractors I see Farmers really using are the early 1900 tractors that are maybe 40 - 60 hp (and yes they're still using them)
2009-05-06 07:17:16 AM marcf   well so much for them breaking down
2009-05-06 07:17:19 AM marcf
2009-05-06 07:17:27 AM ncherry   The company farms are the ones with the huge John Deers, most of the others are Farm-Alls etc.
2009-05-06 07:18:00 AM ncherry   Farmers maintain their equipment well
2009-05-06 07:18:09 AM marcf   it is capital to them, true
2009-05-06 07:19:05 AM marcf   I have no idea how much energy I carry around in a full tank
2009-05-06 07:19:10 AM ncherry   Wish they'd do someting about their chickens! Dang things roost all over. We have a killer chicken squad that we have to watch out for on our bike rides.
2009-05-06 07:19:10 AM marcf   of the Tesla I mean
2009-05-06 07:19:19 AM marcf   he he
2009-05-06 07:19:55 AM ncherry   Now for the Tesla, where do you put in the Everyready C batteries?
2009-05-06 07:20:05 AM ncherry   Do you flip up the seat?

2009-05-06 07:32:00 AM marcf   sometimes I flip the seat, sometimes I forget
2009-05-06 07:36:51 AM ncherry
2009-05-06 07:38:46 AM ncherry   Word of warning, keep an eye on the drive train. That kind of acceleration must be murder on the drive train. My friend used to drag race and he would destroy the custom Ford 9" rear all the time.
2009-05-06 07:40:39 AM ncherry   BTW, my friend and I had a run in with a lady on an electric bike. We all met up at a stop light, light changed she took off fast, we caught up and she was surprised. They accelerate fast but they don't run fast, We dropped her pretty badly
2009-05-06 07:42:28 AM ncherry   Oh, the 180 mile range on the Tesla is real nice. On my commute I'd need to top off everyday to handle the 200 mile week.
2009-05-06 07:42:58 AM ncherry   Most of the other 'lectrics are good for around 80 to 100 miles, not very useful really
2009-05-06 07:43:40 AM ncherry   Well I've gotta run into the lab (do real work today ), see ya!

2009-05-06 07:25:04 PM kdavis   greetings
2009-05-06 08:41:47 PM ncherry   MarcF/Juha, on the question of Electronic Home/CE Pro's question on who own the code article - the problem still exists that these very expensive systems are not made to have thing from outside talk to them. Heck they're not even made to be reprogrammed without great effort. I think this will be to our advantage. Being Open Source does give us a different mind set
2009-05-06 08:42:52 PM kdavis   when you say 'expensive systems', that's relative
2009-05-06 08:43:04 PM kdavis   you have the Crestrons and AMX's, which are extremely closed
2009-05-06 08:43:19 PM kdavis   and then you have the Elks, HAI's that are very open
2009-05-06 08:43:42 PM kdavis   Crestron/AMX are extremely expensive, tens of thousands of dollars
2009-05-06 08:43:49 PM kdavis   Elk, HAI are thousands
2009-05-06 08:43:52 PM kdavis   sometimes less
2009-05-06 08:44:18 PM kdavis   you can get an entry level HAI system (there highest model panel) for ~$1,500.00
2009-05-06 09:10:51 PM ncherry   Sorry about that Ken, no sound (browser problem)
2009-05-06 09:11:36 PM ncherry   Yes, I meant the Crestron and AMXs of the world (in the specific case of th eLink that MarcF brought up Crestron)
2009-05-06 09:12:15 PM ncherry   Elk and HAI are open as there are a number of project that can interface to these systems
