Re : the /. article on new home automation standard, some interesting commentary there re: price, reliability, Insteon pro/cons |

"These days you can run an oil refinery with a touch of a button and keep it running for 20 years with available spare parts. And you can get data in & out of that system in any format you want. Show me the same on a scaled down version for my home and I'll start installing it..." |

OSS = Future proof is a good angle |

|
also a mention that zigbee alliance is building specs and certification for product categories that conform to the same API, probably worth investigating |

"What is needed is a HA API. That way you can write a driver for all the proprietary protocols such as this, as well as things like ProXR, Dallas 1-wire, DMX, and many more." |

it is very similar but without the vendor lock-in, the proprietary protocols and comes with a lower cost |
| 2009-05-26 |
09:46:06 AM |
*juha* |
|
also will have a focus on high-quality and open software base to integrate with all those technologies you mentioned |

Hi there |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:01:51 PM |
jvelociter |
|
I'm trying to find out if OR 1.0 will support some wall outlet switch devices |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:02:10 PM |
jvelociter |
|
(220 european type) |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:02:27 PM |
jvelociter |
|
this is something I should look for into the beehive DB ? |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:03:09 PM |
jvelociter |
|
by wall outlet switch I mean IR-controlled, or wifi controlled |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:03:45 PM |
*juha* |
|
If its IR then check Beehive |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:04:12 PM |
jvelociter |
|
ok |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:04:12 PM |
*juha* |
|
but Wi-fi will be better |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:04:20 PM |
*juha* |
|
more reliable |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:04:38 PM |
jvelociter |
|
as long as it's up and running |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:04:39 PM |
jvelociter |
|
ok |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:04:52 PM |
*juha* |
|
what kind of switch it is? |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:05:43 PM |
jvelociter |
|
I'm looking forward a very simple on/off switch to replace the kind of timers you would put for a coffee machine or a washing machine |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:05:54 PM |
jvelociter |
|
that OR would activate/deactivate |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:06:14 PM |
*juha* |
|
oh so you don't have them yet? |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:06:19 PM |
jvelociter |
|
nope |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:06:27 PM |
*juha* |
|
ok I see |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:06:36 PM |
jvelociter |
|
are there any supported yet ? |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:06:58 PM |
jvelociter |
|
if it's wifi, I guess it's easy to have it supported |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:07:05 PM |
*juha* |
|
yes |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:07:22 PM |
*juha* |
|
marcus had some RF controller stuff, can't remember how he bridged to them |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:07:32 PM |
*juha* |
|
I guess he found an IP device |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:07:42 PM |
jvelociter |
|
ok |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:07:58 PM |
jvelociter |
|
I should look into that |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:08:18 PM |
*juha* |
|
but yeah, IP is the easiest if you can find something for a reasonable price |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:08:24 PM |
*juha* |
|
ie. you don't need too many |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:08:51 PM |
*juha* |
|
or can find a product that lets you do IP<->something else |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:09:08 PM |
*juha* |
|
IP<>RF or IP<>Serial |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:09:28 PM |
*juha* |
|
other than that, X10 is common |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:09:33 PM |
*juha* |
|
which is powerline |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:09:39 PM |
jvelociter |
|
ok |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:09:43 PM |
*juha* |
|
serial<->powerline |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:09:57 PM |
jvelociter |
|
X10 does not need any special wiring ? |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:10:49 PM |
*juha* |
|
no it works on existing PL wiring... but your best bet is to buy locally to make sure it works with whatever conventions they use |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:11:19 PM |
jvelociter |
|
locally, like country wide ? |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:11:20 PM |
jvelociter |
|
I'm in Europe |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:11:24 PM |
*juha* |
|
yeah, country wide |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:11:30 PM |
jvelociter |
|
ok |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:12:06 PM |
*juha* |
|
it's not the most reliable but work for simple setups |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:12:12 PM |
jvelociter |
|
ok X10 looks good for what I want |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:12:16 PM |
jvelociter |
|
it's 1 way ? |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:12:44 PM |
jean-luc |
|
jerome are you coming to amsterdam next week? |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:13:04 PM |
jvelociter |
|
I'd like to, but I'm afraid I won't make it |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:13:09 PM |
jvelociter |
|
hopefully next time |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:13:18 PM |
jean-luc |
|
ok |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:13:45 PM |
*juha* |
|
its 2-way in a sense that you can pull status from devices, but there aren't acks in the protocol so there's no way of knowing if the messages go through... and it doesn't deal well with interference, spikes in electricity and so on |
| 2009-05-26 |
04:13:46 PM |
jvelociter |
|
(I'm in Romania right now, a bit short for the trip) |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:14:06 PM |
jvelociter |
|
I see |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:14:14 PM |
*juha* |
|
its old stuff |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:14:16 PM |
jvelociter |
|
simple "are you on" status |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:14:28 PM |
jvelociter |
|
cool |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:14:32 PM |
jvelociter |
|
I'll dig into that |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:14:45 PM |
jvelociter |
|
the fact it works on existing line is big pls |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:14:47 PM |
jvelociter |
|
plus |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:14:52 PM |
*juha* |
|
for the interface easiest is to do serial, which is known as CM11A |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:15:09 PM |
jvelociter |
|
but you need something that can get serial |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:15:23 PM |
*juha* |
|
CM15A is popular but is USB |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:15:32 PM |
jvelociter |
|
my scenario would be controlling a lamp |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:16:07 PM |
*juha* |
|
right, so you plug the CM11A unit into the wall socket, and the serial cable between ORB and CM11A |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:16:11 PM |
jvelociter |
|
(not a wall or roof lamp, a plugged lamp) |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:16:24 PM |
jvelociter |
|
ok |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:16:47 PM |
*juha* |
|
and there's another unit that goes into the socket where your lamp is |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:16:55 PM |
*juha* |
|
the receiver |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:17:44 PM |
jvelociter |
|
what's this receiver for ? |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:17:47 PM |
*juha* |
|
and the CM11 can send something like 50 or 60 bits per second which the receiver can read |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:18:08 PM |
*juha* |
|
ORB<>CM11A<>Receiver |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:18:30 PM |
jvelociter |
|
ok |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:18:35 PM |
*juha* |
|
ORB (Wifi)<>CM11A (serial) <> Receiver (PL) |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:18:37 PM |
jvelociter |
|
I get it now |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:18:58 PM |
jvelociter |
|
cool |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:20:00 PM |
jvelociter |
|
so I rather should look for a serial receiver to bridge the wall socket |
| 2009-05-26 |
03:20:03 PM |
jvelociter |
|
thanks |
