Configure OpenRemote Boss™ 1.0 for KNX

KNX Support in OpenRemote Boss 1.0

OpenRemote Boss 1.0 supports lights connected to KNX bus to be turned on and off, opening and closing motorized curtains and shades, and controlling other motorized devices on the KNX bus.

For additional features such as dimming lights, monitoring sensor updates, etc. please see OpenRemote KNX iPhone application. For more information about differences between OpenRemote Boss 1.0 KNX support and OpenRemote KNX iPhone application, see the frequently asked questions section below.

OpenRemote Boss 1.0 supports on and off commands through KNXnet/IP gateways and routers. Other commands and device and sensor status updates are not yet supported in 1.0 version. These are planned for addition in the OpenRemote Boss 2.0 version scheduled for Q1/2010.

We are looking for feedback on your use of KNX and what features are most important to you. Let us know on our User Forums and help us prioritize KNX feature implementations.

The following instructions apply to all OpenRemote Boss 1.0 supported operating systems:

  • Microsoft Windows 7
  • Microsoft Windows XP
  • Mac OS X Snow Leopard
  • Voyage Linux 0.5.2 (OpenRemote Orb)
  • Ubuntu 8.10 and later

If you are looking for information about KNX, or more in-depth technical information about the KNX specifications or KNXnet/IP protocol, see our knowledge base entries on KNX.

Required Components

Apple iPhone or iPod Touch Panel

You must install OpenRemote iPhone Console application on your device first.

OpenRemote iPhone application is available free of charge from Apple App Store.

OpenRemote Boss Installation

OpenRemote Boss software can be installed on your personal computer hardware (Linux or Windows).

If you don't want to install OpenRemote Boss yourself, buy OpenRemote ORB with all software pre-installed.

Note: If you are installing OpenRemote Boss on your personal computer, you will also need a WiFi access point for the iPhone application to connect. OpenRemote Orb can be set up to act as your WiFi access point as well.

KNX IP Gateway Or Router

A KNX IP gateway or router unit is required to connect your PC or OpenRemote Orb to your KNX installation (KNX bus).

KNX IP gateway must be commissioned with the ETS software as part of the KNX installation.

Note: To use multiple iPhone consoles simultaneously, a KNX/IP router (instead of a gateway) is recommended.

Configure KNX

Model KNX Setup with OpenRemote User Interface Composer

Use our User Interface Composer to model your KNX deployment. Create user interface elements which map to KNX addresses and KNX commands.

Configure KNX in OpenRemote Boss 1.0 Controller

By default OpenRemote Boss attempts to auto-discover KNX/IP gateway. In most cases this is sufficient and no additional configuration is required from the user.

If, however, you find that you are unable to connect OpenRemote Boss to your KNX IP gateway or router, please check the troubleshooting guide below.
