Configure X10 in OpenRemote 1.0

X10 Support in OpenRemote 1.0

X10 can be used to turn devices and lights on and off from OpenRemote. X10 connectivity is supported via serial port (CM11A) interface. The supported X10 commands in the OpenRemote 1.0 release are ON and OFF.

X10 connections via USB connector (CM15A) or wireless "Firecracker" units (CM17A and CM19A) are not included in the OpenRemote 1.0 release. Other X10 commands such as dimming or unit status updates are also not included in the 1.0 version.

The following instructions apply to OpenRemote 1.0 installations on these operating systems:

  • Microsoft Windows XP
  • Voyage Linux 0.5.2 (OpenRemote Orb)
  • Ubuntu 8.10 or later

Notice that each of the above operating systems must be installed on a hardware that has a serial (RS-232) interface for X10 connectivity.

Required Components

Apple iPhone or iPod Touch Panel

You must install OpenRemote iPhone Console application on your device first.

OpenRemote iPhone application is available free of charge from Apple App Store.

OpenRemote Installation

OpenRemote software can be installed on your personal computer hardware (Linux or Windows).

If you don't want to install OpenRemote yourself, buy OpenRemote ORB with all software pre-installed.

Note: Your hardware must have a serial (RS-232) port to interface with the X10 CM11A unit. You will also need a WiFi access point for the iPhone application to connect to OpenRemote.

X10 Modules

An X10 CM11A (serial to power-line) unit is required to connect your PC or OpenRemote Orb to your in-wall power socket.

Additional lamp and transceiver units are required for each light and device you wish to control with X10 protocol.

Model Your X10 Units with OpenRemote User Interface Composer

Use our User Interface Composer to model your X10 units. Create user interface elements which map to X10 house and device code and X10 commands.

Configure X10 in OpenRemote Boss 1.0 Controller

If you've installed OpenRemote on your personal hardware, configure the RS-232 (serial) port used to connect to X10 CM11A unit.

Note: If you've purchased OpenRemote Orb you can skip this configuration step. Simply attach the RS-232 connector into your OpenRemote Orb unit.
