History
KNX came together from previous European home automation standards EIB, EHS, BatiBUS around 2002.
Marketing
KNX is a specification that is used extensively in industrial and commercial installations. Reference implementations include the Chinese Olympics.
- Heavy on green, pushing low energy cost.
- Emphasis on open standard (the specs passed ISO process in 2006).
- Targets both residential and commercial buildings.
Home Owners
Plays the security aspect, broken window detectors, motion detectors, smoke detectors, gas and water leak detectors, available on demand on mobile. Also heavy marketing angle on energy efficiency, HVAC controls. KNX is finding it's way into the home but remains a very expensive proposition.
Installers
Certified products, ease of install, tools for planning and diagnosis. Very robust stack. Because it works without a controller, it is considered very robust.
