Alternative KNX Deployment Topologies

A typical KNX deployment with OpenRemote Boss 1.0 is shown below. Read further to find possible variations to the typical deployment option.

The elements in this deployment include:

  1. A wireless access point / local area network. Nothing specific needs to be configured here.
  2. iPhone or iPhone Touch as a control panel. OpenRemote iPhone Console application must be installed. You can download it from App Store for free.
  3. OpenRemote Boss installation. OpenRemote Boss can be installed on your personal PC hardware (Linux, Windows or Mac) or you can install a pre-configured and pre-installed OpenRemote ORB on your local network.
  4. KNX IP gateway or router. KNX IP gateway must be commissioned with the ETS software as part of the KNX installation.

OpenRemote ORB as Wireless Access Point

It's also possible to configure OpenRemote ORB itself as a wireless access point to iPhone and iPod Touch control panels. The elements in this deployment remain otherwise the same.

OpenRemote Boss Installed on PC

If you wish to use existing hardware with OpenRemote installation, you can install OpenRemote Boss on Windows, Mac or Linux PC yourself. In this case the PC takes the role of a dedicated, pre-installed OpenRemote ORB. In the deployment topology shown below, the PC also connects wirelessly over WiFi to an access point and then to KNX/IP gateway. Otherwise the elements in this deployment are the same as in the previous one.
